Why does a teenage athlete stop turning up to training?

Almost never because she has lost interest: far more often because the context has stopped working for her. It's easy to read a drop in attendance as "she's lost interest." It almost never is. In most cases the athlete feels out of place precisely as her body changes: periods, swinging energy, a growing chest, eyes that weigh on her. If the environment doesn't talk about it, she's left alone with questions she doesn't dare ask — and she leaves in silence.

This isn't an impression. A longitudinal study of 781 Canadian adolescents found that girls who started puberty earlier were significantly more likely to discontinue organised activities (HR 1.68) than peers with average pubertal timing (Gallant et al., 2023). And between 25% and 61% of adolescent girls avoid or reduce physical activity during their period — for pain, but also for fear of leaking and embarrassment (Harvey et al., 2025). Coaching teenage girls well means, first of all, building a context where staying is easier than leaving. Female drop-out isn't fate: it's an outcome.

1. Talk about the changing body (without embarrassment)

You don't need to be a doctor. You need to normalise it: name the cycle, the tiredness, the body changes in plain, non-judgemental language. When the coach shows it's a topic you can talk about, the athlete stops hiding it — and stops hiding herself.

There's a number here too. In the Female Athlete Health Report 2023, athletes who perceived their coach as very well-informed reported on average 3.2 RED-S symptoms against 4.3 among those who perceived their coach as uninformed: 36% fewer. The report's mean age is 32 — it describes the adult athletic population, not thirteen-year-olds — but the direction is clear, and we dig into it in a coach's words.

2. Adjust the load, don't judge the dip

An adolescent athlete's energy isn't constant, and that's fine. An "amber" day isn't laziness: it's a body working on many fronts at once. Adjusting the load — instead of always demanding the maximum or penalising the dip — is what keeps a girl on the field longer. The message that matters: listening to yourself isn't weakness, it's strategy.

And there is one load adjustment worth more than all the others, because it has been measured: twenty minutes of neuromuscular warm-up, twice a week, cuts ACL injury risk by roughly 60% in athletes aged 13-19 (Petushek et al., 2019). It isn't an addition to the programme: it takes the place of the warm-up already being done, and it only works if it is actually done — below ~66% compliance the benefit disappears (Sugimoto et al., 2012).

There is one moment when adjusting the load matters more than any other, and you spot it with a wall measure: the quarter in which an athlete grows fast. Peak bone mineral accrual comes roughly six months after peak height velocity (Bailey et al., 1999): for a period, bone is already longer but not yet as dense. That doesn't mean stopping — it means holding volume steady and working on technique and control, as we explain in the growth spurt in young female athletes.

Then there is the load adjustment decided in thirty seconds rather than over a week: what happens after a blow to the head. Across sex-comparable sports, female athletes are 1.26 times more likely not to be removed from activity after a concussion (95% CI 1.09-1.45) (Zynda et al., 2021) — and those who stay on the field recover in 44 days instead of 22 (Elbin et al., 2016). There is one rule, and it is worth writing it down before you need it: if a concussion is suspected, the athlete comes off and does not return that day.

3. Use team signals, never individual data

Understanding how the team is doing lets you act before overload — schedule a deload, change the tone of a heavy week. But this must be done with aggregated, anonymous signals: never expose an individual athlete's data. Privacy isn't red tape, it's the condition for girls to trust you and open up. The moment an athlete fears her cycle or her mood could end up on display in front of everyone, she stops telling you the truth.

4. Create space and continuity

Small things make a big difference: privacy in changing rooms, period products available, continuity in the people they look up to. A girl who feels seen and safe doesn't need to "disappear" when her body tests her.

And watch what looks like a kit detail: among girls aged 11-18, 46% say their breasts affect their participation in compulsory sport — rising to 51% at exactly 13-14 — yet only 10% always wear a sports bra (Scurr et al., 2016). It's a problem with a simple fix, one that costs nothing and that nobody names.
